In the reign of Emperor Taiyuan of the Jin Dynasty, there was a man who made his livelihood by fishing in Wuling. As he was rowing his boat along a stream, he forgot how far he had gone. Suddenly, he came to a peach orchard that extended for hundreds of paces along the bank. There were no other trees in sight, and the fragrance of the grass was delightful, while the falling petals made a splendid sight. The fisherman was very surprised at this sight. He continued to move forward, intending to explore the limits of the orchard. At the end of the orchard, the source of the stream was found, and beyond it was a hill. There was a small opening in the hill, which seemed to have some light shining through it. He left his boat and entered through this opening. At first it was very narrow, only just wide enough for a person to pass through. After walking for几十步, he found himself in an open and expansive area. The land was flat and broad, and the houses were in good order. There were fertile fields, beautiful pools, and well-maintained mulberry trees and bamboo groves. The roads were well-maintained and connected, and the sounds of chickens and dogs could be heard everywhere. The men and women who were coming and going there were all dressed like outsiders. Old men and children were all happy and content. When they saw the fisherman, they were greatly surprised; they asked him where he came from, and he answered them fully. They immediately invited him to their homes as a guest, prepared wine and killed chickens for a feast in his honor. When the villagers heard about this person, they all came to inquire about his story. They said that their ancestors had escaped from the turbulence of the Qin Dynasty, and had led their wives and children to this remote place. They never came out again, and thus were separated from the outside world. When asked about the current era, they had no knowledge of the Han dynasty, not to mention the Jin dynasty. The fisherman recounted everything he had heard to them, and they all expressed their amazement. Each family invited him to their homes again as a guest; he stayed for several days before bidding farewell. The people of this place instructed him, saying "Do not tell others about this place." After leaving the village, he found his boat and followed the same path back to the county capital to report to the Magistrate. The Magistrate immediately sent someone with him to search for the place as he had described it before, but they never found it again. So it became a mystery that was never solved. Later, there was no one who came to inquire about it.
